Past Tense — Formation

The Belarusian past tense is formed from the infinitive stem. It does not change by person — it only changes by gender and number of the subject.

чытаць → чыта- — to read → stem chyta-

Add these suffixes to the infinitive stem:

The same pattern applies to all regular verbs:

працаваць → ён працаваў, яна працавала, яны працавалі — to work → he worked, she worked, they worked

гаварыць → ён гаварыў, яна гаварыла, яны гаварылі — to speak → he spoke, she spoke, they spoke

жыць → ён жыў, яна жыла, яны жылі — to live → he lived, she lived, they lived
