Word Stems

Аснова слова

The stem of a noun (аснова)

The stem (аснова) of a noun is the part that remains when you remove the ending. All case and number endings are added to the stem. Knowing the stem type helps you predict which endings a noun takes.

дом → дом- (stem) — remove zero ending → stem дом-

шко́ла → школ- (stem) — remove -а → stem школ-

вакно́ → вакн- (stem) — remove -о → stem вакн-

рэ́чка → рэчк- (stem) — remove -а → stem рэчк-

Stems are classified by their final consonant:

Different stem types take different case endings. For example, hard-stem masculine nouns take -ы in the plural, while soft-stem nouns take -і: • дом → дам**ы́** (hard stem → -ы) • дзень → дн**і** (soft stem → -і)
