Ці ты ведаеш?

Questions and Answers

To form a yes/no question in Belarusian, add the particle **ці** at the beginning of a statement: Statement: Ты ведаеш яго. — You know him. Question: **Ці** ты ведаеш яго? — Do you know him? The particle 'ці' works like English 'do/does' in questions. It signals that a yes/no answer is expected.

Ці ты ве́даеш яго́? — Do you know him?

Ці гэ́та но́вы ву́чань? — Is this a new student?

Ці ён тут? — Is he here?

To answer 'yes', use **так** (tak) or the emphatic **але́** (a-LYE): - Так, я ведаю яго. — Yes, I know him. - Але, ведаю. — Yes indeed, I know (him). Note: 'але́' as an affirmative answer is different from 'але' (but) — the stress falls on a different syllable!

Так, я ве́даю. — Yes, I know.

Але́, ве́даю. — Yes (indeed), I know.

To answer 'no', use **не** (nye) or **ня** (nya) before the verb: - Не, я не ведаю яго. — No, I don't know him. Note: 'не' is used before most words, 'ня' is used before some specific words (e.g., ня ма́ю — I don't have).

Не, я не ве́даю. — No, I don't know.

Не, гэ́та не ву́чань. — No, this is not a student.
