The pronoun **хто?** (who?) is used for living beings — people and animals. Examples: - Хто гэта? — Who is this? - Хто там? — Who is there? - Хто гэты хлопец? — Who is this boy?

The pronoun **што?** (what?) is used for non-living things — objects, concepts, ideas. Examples: - Што гэта? — What is this? - Што там? — What is there?
Што гэ́та? — What is this?

Я ве́даю, што гэ́та. — I know what this is.
**хто?** → living beings (people, animals) **што?** → things, objects, concepts This is similar to English 'who' vs. 'what', but Belarusian applies it more strictly — animals always get хто?, never што?.
