Instrumental Case Introduction

Творны склон

The Instrumental Case (Творны склон)

The instrumental case answers the questions кім? (by whom?) and чым? (by what? / with what?). It is used for: 1. Means or instrument: Я пішу ручкай. (I write with a pen.) 2. Accompaniment (with з/зь): Я іду з сябрам. (I go with a friend.) 3. After быць/стаць: Ён стаў настаўнікам. (He became a teacher.)

The instrumental singular endings depend on gender:

The preposition з (with) is used before consonants. Before soft consonants or vowels, it becomes зь. 'З' + instrumental = 'together with'.

з сябрам — with a friend — з + masculine instrumental

з сястрой — with a sister — з + feminine instrumental

зь бацькам — with father — зь before soft consonant
