The Belarusian sounds that surprise people

Watch out for Г!

Belarusian Г is the BIG difference from Russian. In Belarusian, Г is pronounced like English 'h' in 'hello' — NOT like 'g' in 'go'. The hard 'g' exists but is rare, used mostly in a few specific words.

Letter Г г

  • Г г (h) — ha: soft 'h' as in 'hello'
  • горад — city
  • галава — head
  • гэта — this

Letter Дз дз

  • Дз дз (dz) — dze: like 'ds' in 'kids'
  • дзень — day
  • дзякуй — thanks
  • дзіця — child

Letter Дж дж

  • Дж дж (dž / j) — dzhe: like 'j' in 'jam'
  • дождж — rain
  • джала — sting
