The signature letters of Belarusian

Ў is the most Belarusian letter

Ў (с кароткай / 'short u') is unique to Belarusian — no other language uses this letter. It's pronounced like English 'w' in 'cow'. Key rule: Ў only appears after a vowel — never at the start of a word, never after a consonant. It 'closes' a syllable. (In Lacinka, it's written as 'ŭ'.)

Letter Ў ў

  • Ў ў (ŭ / w) — у нескладовае (non-syllabic u): like 'w' in 'cow'
  • праўда — truth
  • сяброўка — friend (f.)
  • быў — was
  • воўк — wolf

Letter Й й

  • Й й (j / y) — і кароткае (short i): like 'y' in 'yes'
  • мой — my
  • край — edge / land
  • гарбата — tea
