The Six Cases of Belarusian

Belarusian nouns change their endings depending on their role in the sentence. These different forms are called cases. There are six cases:

The accusative marks the direct object — the thing that receives the action. In this unit we focus on the accusative singular.

Я бачу маму. (мама → маму) — I see mom. (-а → -у)

Я чытаю кнігу. (кніга → кнігу) — I read a book. (-а → -у)

For feminine nouns, the nominative ending changes in the accusative:

For masculine inanimate and all neuter nouns, the accusative form is the same as the nominative: дом → дом, лецішча → лецішча. Masculine animate nouns use the genitive form in the accusative: сябра → сябру.

Я бачу дом. — I see a house. (m. inanimate — no change)

Я бачу сябру. — I see a friend. (m. animate — genitive ending)
