The back consonants г, к, х are ALWAYS followed by і (never ы) in endings and suffixes. This affects verb conjugation, noun declension, and adjective forms:
рукі (not *рукы) — hands
дарогі (not *дарогы) — roads
мухі (not *мухы) — flies
Belarusian verbs belong to one of two conjugation types. Second conjugation verbs have the endings: -у/-ю, -іш, -іць, -ім, -іце, -аць/-яць. Compare this with first conjugation (-у/-ю, -еш, -е, -ем, -еце, -уць).

Other common verbs that follow this pattern:
сядзе́ць — я сяджу́, ты сядзі́ш — to sit
бачыць — я бачу, ты бачыш — to see
хадзі́ць — я хаджу́, ты хо́дзіш — to walk/go
вучы́ць — я вучу́, ты ву́чыш — to teach/study
