Age Expressions with the Dative 🎂
In Belarusian, age is expressed using the dative case of the person + a numeral + год/гады/гадоў. The structure is: [dative pronoun/noun] + [number] + [год/гады/гадоў] Literally: "To me [is] ten years."
Мне дзесяць гадоў. — I am ten years old.
Табе пяць гадоў. — You are five years old.
Яму дванаццаць гадоў. — He is twelve years old.
The word for 'year' changes depending on the number: • 1 → год: Мне адзін год. • 2, 3, 4 → гады: Яму два гады. • 5-20 → гадоў: Ёй пятнаццаць гадоў. • 21 → год, 22-24 → гады, 25-30 → гадоў (the pattern repeats based on the last digit)
To ask someone's age: • Колькі табе гадоў? — How old are you? (informal) • Колькі вам гадоў? — How old are you? (formal/plural)
