Nouns ending in -а or -я (mostly feminine, plus masculine like дзядзька) form the genitive by changing -а → -ы and -я → -і:
Neuter nouns change -а → -а (stays) or -о → -а, -е → -я, -ё → -я:
Masculine nouns ending in a consonant add -а/-я or -у/-ю. The -а/-я ending is used for concrete, countable nouns. The -у/-ю ending is used for abstract, uncountable, or collective nouns:
