Націск — why vowels change
In Belarusian, word stress is unpredictable — it can fall on any syllable, and there are no accent marks in everyday writing. You must memorize stress for each word. But here's the crucial part: stress directly controls spelling. When vowels are unstressed, they change. This is the #1 feature that makes Belarusian sound and look different from Russian or Ukrainian.
The most important rule: **When О is not stressed, it is written and pronounced as А.** This is called 'аканне' (akanne). Examples: • малакó (milk) — stress on last syllable, so earlier О's → А • вадá (water) — stress on last syllable, first vowel is А • гóрад (city) → гарады́ (cities) — stress shifts, О → А This rule is built into Belarusian spelling — you write exactly what you hear!
A similar rule for Е: **Unstressed Е in the syllable right before stress becomes Я.** This is called 'яканне' (yakanne). Examples: • сястрá (sister) — Я before the stressed -рá • вяснá (spring) — Я before the stressed -нá • зямля́ (land) — Я before the stressed -ля́ This only happens in the 'pretonic' syllable — the one immediately before stress.
